The revision of ORDA Ethiopia’s Vision, Mission, and Values (VMV) reflects the organization’s institutional maturity, evolving development realities, and the strategic priorities of the upcoming planning period. While the existing VMV served ORDA Ethiopia well in previous strategies, revision has become necessary to ensure that the organization’s strategic direction remains relevant, forward-looking, and focused on long-term impact.

Vision Statement

To see thriving communities living in harmony with their environment in Ethiopia

The vision represents a clear strategic advancement. The concept of thriving goes beyond income and assets to include resilience, social cohesion, adaptive capacity, dignity, and well-being. It places communities rather than the economy or the institution at the center of change. The explicit reference to living in harmony with the environment reflects ORDA Ethiopia’s long-standing environmental mandate and its future climate commitments. It moves away from institutional self-definition toward a community-level end state, consistent with best practices in strategic planning for mature development organizations. While ORDA Ethiopia’s ambition and operations are national, the vision reflects the belief that national transformation is achieved through the cumulative impact of thriving communities across Ethiopia.

Mission Statement

 Empowering communities and their institutions to build resilient livelihoods and a sustainable environmental stewardship

The new mission is a strategic upgrade, not a departure. Resilience highlights shock absorption, adaptation, and transformation. Sustainability emphasizes long-term stewardship of natural resources and future-proof livelihoods. Together, that position ORDA as a builder of lasting systems and institutions, not only a provider of short-term support.
