ORDA-EU-German Agro Action /Welthungerhilfe sign an agreement for new project initiative

It is disclosed that ORDA- EU- German Agro Action /Welthungerhilfe signed recently an agreement for new project initiative named MDG Sanitation: whole Sanitation program for the poor in Urban and Peri-Urban of Amhara in Avanti Blue Nile Hotel, Bahir Dar on 22 January, 2013.

His Excellency Ahmed Abitew, Deputy Head of the Amhara National Regional State and Head of Bureau of Industry and Urban Development and Chairperson of Board of Directors of ORDA emphasized in the signatory agreement ceremony that the new initiated project is not only expected to alleviate poor sanitation problem but also assist in bringing sustainable solution for cities which are currently becoming the center of various industrial areas.  His Excellency also urged both ORDA and Welthungerhilfe to work hard in recording their best experiences to expand in the big cities of our region.

ORDA’s Executive Director, Dr. Ambachew Mekonnen, expressed his gratefulness to German Agro Action /Welthungerhilfe for having more than 20 years strong partnership with ORDA and its unremitting and significant involvement for the development effort of the region.  He also assured that ORDA will work hard and toughen its endeavors as usual to fulfill its responsibility in a bid to let MDG Sanitation: whole Sanitation program for the poor in Urban and Peri-Urban of Amhara attain its objective in bringing meaningful sanitation changes for Urban and Peri-Urban poor residents.

Furthermore, His Excellence Semachew Wondemagegn, Mayor of Bahir Dar City, confirmed to provide his unreserved effort and assistance to the implementation of the project in order to discharge its intended objectives successfully on time as its schedule. He also appreciated Welthungerhilfe and ORDA for their innovative ideas and urge their commitment to discharge their respective responsibilities as usual.

Besides, the German Agro Action /Welthungerhilfe / Regional Director in Ethiopia, Mrs. Ursula Langkamp, on her part expressed her heartfelt thanks to all who have involved in realizing this project and  her proud to sign the project agreement with fully trusted development partner, ORDA. She added that ORDA and Welthungerhilfe are always taking up very innovative approaches as practiced in the MDG WaSH and the Biodiversity projects. She also unveiled that the long lasting partnership is now going up for Urban Sanitation, which is new for both of them.

Also, Manfred Regional Director of Welthungerhilfe in Ethiopia said “It hasn’t been a core business to engage in urban sanitation for both Welthungerhilfe and ORDA but he said “It is the right step at the right time to bring changes in the urban areas of poor sanitation. So, he said this focus of transformation needs great attention to bring sustainable changes in urban areas. He also disclosed that only 5 projects globally accepted out of 1,000 submissions which ORDA is the one.

As understood from the project agreement document, ORDA and Welthungerhilfe will start to implement  the project with in the coming few weeks, which is expected to benefit over 137  thousand people, with the budget allocated over 71 million Ethiopian Birr.
