ORDA, in collaboration with A Glimmer of Hope, the strategic partner, have been carrying out Integrated Community Development Projects in Gondar Zuria district of Amhara region since 2014.

W/ro Wodaje Worku, who has five children (4 male & 1 female) is a resident in Gondar Zuria woreda Lay Dugie kebele at Model village. The farmer explained, “We suffered a lot due to lack of safe water. I, together with my children drank unprotected river water for many years. Our children were highly burdened to fetch water. Due to this reason, they were late to school.”

“By the time, I gave birth my 4th child; I was obliged to go to the river & fetch water at the 12th date 7 years ago. Since there was no water for drinking & personal cleaning/washing, I carried my infant on my back & 10 liters of Jerrican water on my head.”

W/ro Wodaje & her children had suffered a lot caused by waterborne diseases. But, all these have come to an end after ORDA & AGOH made use of Model No. 2 spring scheme (SPD). The community doesn’t waste extra time and energy and get freed from diseases. Their children are also attending school on time. Moreover, the project encouraged them to build and use latrine.

The Woman said, “My dream of getting safe water in a nearby village has come to a reality. The scheme was opened for use when I was making a local beer ‘tella’ for my child’s baptismal. This has doubled my happiness. I’m now very much grateful to ORDA and AGOH.”

A total of 30 household heads benefited from from Luy Dugie Model No. 2 scheme. They have strong WASHCO members. The scheme is well protected and fenced with tree seedlings of suspania. The beneficiaries clean the scheme daily & each member pays 5 birr monthly. We check out that they saved 8,200 birr from ACSI until June 2018. Saving money for maintenance & construction of additional scheme is prerequisite of the government rule to build supplementary water scheme.
